I just received some information as below from my OUM classmate. It is regarding School Based Assessment in Malaysia, i do not know how true is it. Please give some feedback after read.
Starting from next year, all Yr 1 pupils will be the pioneer group starting on our new system of education where less emphasis will on exams! 70% will be school based, that means practically all that they say, write and do in school will be part of evaluation. In other words, their school work, projects, oral, co-curriculum will be evaluated. The UPSR will only comprise 30% of the whole evaluation.
The Form 1's will also be starting it. Theirs will be 50% school based and 50% PMR. SPM students will face a 30% school based evaluation and 70% SPM.
What do you guys think? Will parents now ensure their children be more hardworking, and more obedient? In private schools, will parents be making more complaints and try to influence their children's marks? Or will they be nicer to the teachers??
i think they should switch the percentage as the primary kids should have a better base of understanding on the syllabus, thus the exams should comprises 70% to test how hard they work for their studies, and the assessments should take the 30%.
ReplyDeletefor the Lower form (PMR), 50-50 it's just okay as they teenagers should learn to face other obstacles and challenges like communication and thinking development, rather than just the book based knowledge, yet they still have to learn the basic knowledge.
as the age getting greater, they have not only to get the infos from the books, but for this age, they have to interpret the informations given and they have to work in the groups and other challenges such as holding the activities in the school.
I guess this will be more rational. just take the 1+1=2 as an example. the primary kids knew this by memorizing: 1+1=2, 1+1 is not equal to 3, 4 0r 5. They don't know why 1+1=2. as they grow older, when they step into the lower secondary education, they will knew thay 1+1=2 is because of when we have one apple, and we were given one more, we will have 2 apples. as they step further to the upper Form of secondary schools, they will know that 1+1 is not really equal to 2, because they will knew that the apples will not have the equal weight and volume, so 1+1 is not necessary to 2. As the age getting higher, humans have to think more and i dont really understand why the MOE want to change the systems so often, as though that they take the school kids as the experiment apparatus.
But for sure, if the primary school kids were given task as doing folios and all that, for sure the parents will pay for the folios and it's too hard for a fresh brain to analyze rationally and correctly. I had been through cases like the parents asked someone else to do the folios for the kids. (for your info, i was given 50 bucks for only the cover, as i was told by the daddy: the cover comprises 10% out of 30% in the final exam, and for doing the whole folio, i was paid for few hundreds, of course the kid is from a rich family), can you see how unfair it is?
